We catch up with Dami Babalola, Axalta's architectural colour expert in the UK, to see what architects want from powder coatings now and in the future

According to Anne-Lise, innovations in anodic-style powder coatings have led to some of the most interesting and in-demand pearlescent finishes on the market in recent years. “Thanks to our specification tool COLOURit, We can track our customers’ colour preferences,” she says. The COLOURit tool lets architects compare different colours and finishes of powder coatings on architectural details, such as façades and windows.

“Out of the 12 most popular colours, six are anodic finishes. This trend is mirrored in our sales of powder coatings over the last five years,” says Anne-Lise. She is confident the luxurious anodic look will continue to influence the kinds of coatings we’ll see in the future.

Positive Changes

Another driver for future finishes will come from the way architects are increasingly using design to connect the built environment to the natural world. In response to this spirit of connection with nature, powder coating colours and textures will evolve to blend the natural and the man-made. “Examples of this are already seen in the ICONICA collection of super durable coatings,” says Anne-Lise. In the collection, earthy tones and deep colours from the solar system sit alongside metallics with a powerful element feel.

Looking ahead, Anne-Lise believes that the need for ever more sustainable solutions and superior performance will drive collaborative innovation, influenced by all areas of society. “Technology and science are contributing to construction and design. A minimal footprint and a reduction in the number of materials and resources we use will inspire the powder coatings of the future.”

The push to simplify so we can connect to something bigger than ourselves will inspire finishes that celebrate the textures and colours found in our wider universe, according to Anne-Lise. “We understand that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves, and that the natural and the man-made need to coexist in harmony.”
